Methods of Diagnosis
Clinical Evaluation
- Doctors first take a detailed medical history, focusing on menstrual pain, pelvic pain, infertility duration, and family history.
- A physical (pelvic) exam may detect nodules, tenderness, or enlarged ovaries.
Imaging Techniques
- Ultrasound: Can detect ovarian endometriomas (“chocolate cysts”), but not always small lesions.
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): Provides better visualization of deep infiltrating endometriosis
- These imaging tools help plan treatment but cannot confirm all cases.
Laparoscopy (Gold Standard)
- The most accurate method for diagnosis.
- A small camera is inserted into the abdomen to visually identify and sometimes biopsy lesions.
- Allows simultaneous treatment, lesions can be removed during the same procedure.
- Considered the best approach when infertility is suspected to be linked to endometriosis.
Histological Confirmation
- Biopsy samples taken during laparoscopy can be analyzed under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis.
