Tesa / Pesa / Microtese
What is Tesa (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) ?
A simple procedure where a fine needle is inserted into the testicle to aspirate (suction out) fluid and tissue containing sperm.
What is Pesa (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration) ?
A needle is passed through the scrotal skin into the epididymis (where sperm mature and are stored) to aspirate sperm-containing fluid.
What is Micro Tese (Microdissection Testicular Sperm Extraction) ?
A highly precise version of TESE using a surgical microscope to identify and remove only the sperm-producing parts of the testis.
When is Tesa Considered ?
Used when sperm are being produced but not released into ejaculate due to a blockage (obstructive azoospermia), or after vasectomy.
When is Pesa Considered ?
Ideal for men with obstructive azoospermia (e.g., after vasectomy) but normal sperm production.
When is Micro Tese Considered ?
Reserved for men with very low or no sperm production (severe non-obstructive azoospermia) where finding sperm is challenging.
Types of IVF Treatment
Tesa Type
- Needle-based aspiration directly from the testicle.
Pesa Type
- Needle aspiration from the epididymis.
Micro Tese Type
- Microsurgical, targeted testis exploration and tissue retrieval.
Step Process
Procedure
Step 1 : Procedure of Tesa
- Performed under local anesthesia. A needle is passed into the testis, and material is suctioned into a syringe. Takes about 10 minutes.
Step 2 : Procedure of Pesa
- Performed under local anesthesia; takes about 10 minutes.
Step 3 : Procedure of Micro Tese
- Microsurgical, targeted testis exploration and tissue retrieval.
Results of Tesa
Quick and minimally invasive; useful when sperm production is normal but release is blocked. Samples can be used immediately for ICSI or frozen.
Results of Pesa
Fast, low-risk, good for immediate sperm retrieval for IVF/ICSI.
Results of Micro Tese
Higher success in retrieving sperm compared to standard TESE, with reduced tissue damage. Ideal when prior methods failed.
